Reception and the Homeric Tradition From the reception of Anacreon in early modern Britain we move on to another area where the concept of tradition is of particular interest to students of reception. In the first half of the twentieth century, Milman Parry influentially defined Homeric poetry as the product of a traditional art form (Parry 1971). Linguistic formulae and other traditional patterns provide the performing bard with an economic means of responding to the constraints of oral improvisation.

It seems that before the third century, texts of Homer were noticeably more fluid than afterwards: the early papyri, as well as the Homeric quotations found in classical authors, vary significantly and sometimes report entire lines which have since disappeared (West 1988: 45, on the ‘wild’ papyri; and Labarbe 1949, on Plato). After the work of the Alexandrians in the third century – most notably Zenodotus, Aristophanes and Aristarchus – the texts of Homer became more uniform, although the Alexandrian scholars also appear to have introduced some conjectures and corrections of their own.
